The 10/40 Model of Care for the Dying Person

Dr Susie Wilkinson

An exploration of the international Collaborative 10/40 Model which consists of the 10 Key Principles for Best Care for the Dying Person and 40 outcomes of care to support individualised care at the bedside, which have recently been ratified by a Delphi study.

Implementing a Care Plan for the Dying Person in the Hospice/Community Setting

In Argentina 10 years ago a model program of comprehensive care for dying patients PAMPA (Multidisciplinary Assistance Program Pallium) was commenced in 6 pilot centers (hospice, hospitals and home based care). This Program is compliant with the Collaborative 10/40 Model of Care and implementation methodology.  Vilma's presentation will explore the implementation of a care plan in the community setting in Buenos Aires City and show what evidence-based 'best care for the dying person' really looks like in a middle-income country where less than 10% of the population has access to palliative care services.

Susie is the International Liaison Lead for the International Collaborative and has assisted sixteen countries to implement the 10/40 Model of care.  She has also enabled a facilitator network of health care professionals involved in the implemention the 10/40 Model to collaborate and share experiences to further develop the model by creating a quality improvement framework and educational programme .

Vilma is the Research Coordinator of RED-IN-Pal at Pallium Latinoamérica Institute (Buenos Aires, Argentina)

Coordinator of PAMPA Program (End of Life care plan) and the Head of Palliative Care Department- Institute of Medical Research Lanari University of Buenos Aires (Argentina).  She is also an Executive Committee member of "The International Collaborative for the best care for the dying person" and Coordinator of The International Collaborative Reference Centre-Pallium Latinoamérica

Professor John Ellershaw

University of Liverpool, UK

John is Professor of Palliative Medicine and a founder of the Academic Palliative Care Unit at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital.  He chairs the Executive Committee of the International Collaborative for Best Care for the Dying Person.
